Toyota had several goals while designing the 86; primarily affordability, handling and as much fun-to-drive as they could manage. The car's rear-wheel drivetrain is mated to a torquey, efficient powertrain, all built on a lightweight platform that makes a very fun-to-drive package.
The 2.0L horizontally opposed engine, designed in partnership with Subaru, makes 205 horsepower and revs all the way to 7,500 RPM. Coupled with the car's light weight and a choice between a precise 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission, this engine offers the Toyota strong straight-line thrust while returning up to a combined 28 mpg.
The 2019 Toyota 86 is offered in three trim levels: base, GT and TRD Special Edition. The base trim comes decently equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, leather-trimmed steering wheel, 7-inch touchscreen display, 8-speaker audio system, limited slip differential, sport bucket seats, keyless entry and a rearview camera.
Additional features included on the GT trim include a rear aerodynamic wing, aerodynamic underbody panel, LED fog lights, heated front leather/suede seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless start and a 4.2-inch multi-information display.
The new-for-2019 TRD Special Edition adds more focus on performance. Standard features include 18-inch wheels with high-performance tires, upgraded suspension, Brembo brakes, rear spoiler, TRD performance exhaust, red and black leather-trimmed steering wheel and performance bucket seats. Unique TRD interior and exterior styling sets the Special Edition apart, along with TRD front, rear and side underbody spoilers.
Toyota offers several dealer-installed performance accessories including TRD performance air filter, TRD lowering springs, TRD performance dual exhaust and a TRD sway bar kit.
From a safety standpoint, the 86 offers plenty of electronic assistance. Anti-lock brakes are of course, standard. Traction control and stability control are also included, but can be switched off for serious track work. The 86 also comes standard with six airbags, including side curtain airbags and dual-stage advanced driver and passenger airbags.
